Fault Lines Appear in Meta–Scale AI Deal

Meta’s huge investment in Scale AI, totaling $14.3 billion, aimed to accelerate its AI ambitions with the creation of Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). CEO Alexandr Wang and several senior executives joined to guide the initiative. Yet, early friction is apparent.

Ruben Mayer, a former Scale AI senior executive, departed Meta after just two months. Sources said he managed AI data teams outside TBD Labs, though Mayer insisted he was involved in the core lab from day one and left for personal reasons.

Meta is also relying increasingly on alternative data-labeling firms, including Surge and Mercor, as researchers express concerns about the quality of Scale AI’s datasets, demonstrating that the partnership may face headwinds.
